Dr Rupy Aujla is an NHS GP working with a masters in Nutritional Medicine. The best Sunday Times bestselling author spoke with Express.co.uk about the gut and had an important message about bloating.
He has teamed up with Yakult to talk about the gut-brain axis. The important relationship between the gut and the mind.
The health professional made a warning, speaking to Express.co.uk, about bloating and how overlooking the condition could be dangerous.
Dr Rupy, the founder of ‘The Doctor’s Kitchen’, which strives to educate about the medicinal effects of eating well, said: “The topic of bloating is a really important one, and I think it sounds like a trivial subject but in a lot of cases, bloating has nothing to do with the gut. It could be due to sinister causes.”
The doctor, also founding director of Culinary Medicine, a non-profit organisation teaching doctors and medical students the foundations of nutrition, claimed people should be aware bloating can nod to something dangerous.
He went on: “So, whenever anyone comes and sees me as a GP, I’m always thinking about red flags.
“Is this cancer? Is this gynaecological stuff? Is this something in your diet, something that you have an intolerance to? Is it psychological?
“The suite of different things that can cause both is really varied.
“So, I think that the most important thing. People should be aware of is bloating is not a trivial symptom.”
If you have bloating that has come on quickly, or seems out of the ordinary in any sense, booking in with your GP is advised.

It is also important to look out for a number of symptoms presenting alongside bloating, Dr Rupy said.
He advised seeing a professional “especially if (the bloating is) new.
“Especially against other symptoms, mainly weight loss, changing periods and skin issues.
“Anything that’s unusual has to be something that you discuss with your GP.”
He had a general warning about gynaecological cancers.
Dr Rupy said: “I don’t think a lot of people are aware of the five different types of gynaecological cancers.
“I mean most people have heard about cervical screening, but not screening for anything else.
“In a lot of cases bloating can be one of the earliest symptoms that we want to make sure that we’re not missing.
“It’s uncommon, but it’s still something that you don’t want to miss.”
There are some easy exercises to ease bloating pain at home.
Stretches have been known to help with the unpleasant sensations.
Yoga is a great way to banish the bloat, according to the medical website Healthline.
